How to plan activities for a trip so the days actually work

One main thing per half day, travel time counted door to door, and a buffer before anything you can't move. Here's the method, with a real January day in Rovaniemi.

Tall pine trees in a snowy forest with low winter sun shining through the trunks and a wooden bench beside a trodden path

Quick answer. Plan one main activity per half day and count each one door to door, including pick-ups and transfers. Put outdoor things in daylight, check opening hours for your exact dates, and leave a buffer before anything you can't move.

  • Two activities a day is plenty for most people: one main, one light.
  • A 45 minute husky ride can take three to four hours out of your day.
  • In Rovaniemi in mid January the sun is up for about four hours, from 10:19 to 14:34 on the 15th.
  • Opening hours change with the season and on holidays, so check them for the exact date.
  • Keep half a day free in the middle of the trip for anything the weather moves.

How many activities per day on vacation?

Two is plenty for most days: one main activity and one lighter one. On the day you arrive, plan one at most, because flights run late and everyone is tired.

The reason is the hidden time around each activity. Take Bearhill Husky's Happy Trail tour near Rovaniemi: it's a 2.5 hour programme with 45 minutes of sledding, and the pick-up comes 15 to 90 minutes before the start (Bearhill Husky, October 2026).

Add the drive back and that 45 minute ride uses three to four hours of your day. Plan a second big activity on top and you'll spend the afternoon watching the clock.

People spend a lot of time on this part of planning. In a 2024 Go City and Talker Research survey of US frequent travellers, researching and booking experiences took 3 hours and 54 minutes on average, more than any other planning task.

Step 1: Count door to door time, not activity time

The time on a listing often covers only the activity. For your plan you need everything from leaving your room to getting back.

Add these up for each activity:

Some real numbers from Rovaniemi:

Trip from the city centreDistanceTime
Santa Claus Village by bus line 8About 8 km30 minutes to the Arctic Circle stop (2024 to 2025 timetable)
Apukka Resort by carAbout 18 kmAbout 15 minutes
Ranua Wildlife Park by tour bus80 kmAbout an hour each way; the whole trip takes 5 to 6 hours

Step 2: Fit outdoor activities into daylight

Look up sunrise and sunset for your actual dates before you place anything outside. In the far north in winter, this decides most of the plan.

In Rovaniemi on 21 December 2026, the sun rises at 11:07 and sets at 13:22, about 2 hours and 14 minutes of daylight. There's usable twilight on either side, from about 9:16 to 15:13 (sunrise-sunset.org).

By 15 January 2027 the sun is up from 10:19 to 14:34. In mid January, each day is about 7 minutes longer than the one before.

So put husky rides, snowmobile safaris and anything with a view around the middle of the day. Museums, saunas, dinner and aurora tours go in the dark hours.

Step 3: Check opening hours for your exact dates

Opening hours shift with the season and on holidays, and the website's front page doesn't always show the change.

Arktikum, the science museum in Rovaniemi, is closed on Mondays from March to November but opens every day from 10 to 18 between 1 December 2026 and 28 February 2027. Ticket sales stop 30 minutes before closing, and it's closed on 24 December 2026 (Arktikum).

At Santa Claus Village, Santa Claus Office opens 8 to 20 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, then 9 to 18 until the end of March (Santa Claus Village).

Write the opening hours next to each activity in your plan. It takes a minute and saves you turning up to a closed door.

Step 4: One main thing per half day

Split each day into a morning half and an afternoon half. Each half gets one main thing, and the rest of the time is for food, rest and getting around.

Don't put two activities with fixed start times back to back unless they're in the same place. If the first one runs late, you lose the second.

Pick the main thing for each half by what it needs. Outdoor things go where the light is, and things you can do any time fill the other half.

Step 5: Add buffers where things can't move

Leave 30 to 60 minutes before anything with a fixed start, like a tour pick-up, a restaurant booking or a flight. That's our rule of thumb, and you'll want the longer end in winter, when you're putting on boots and layers.

Keep half a day free somewhere in the middle of the trip. If a safari gets cancelled for wind or cold, you have somewhere to move it.

Leave flexible things unbooked until you're there. An aurora tour is best booked on the day, once you've seen the cloud forecast. Our guide on what to book ahead in Lapland goes through which is which.

A worked example: one winter day in Rovaniemi

Here's a Friday, 15 January 2027, for two adults staying in the city centre. The main thing is a husky ride in the morning half, and the light thing is a museum in the afternoon.

Bearhill Husky doesn't publish start times, so this plan assumes the tour starts at 10:30. The operator confirms the actual pick-up time when you book.

TimeWhatWhy it's here
8:00BreakfastTime to eat and layer up before the pick-up
9:30Hotel pick-upBearhill picks up 15 to 90 minutes before the start
10:30 to 13:00Happy Trail husky tour, 45 minutes on the sledThe sun is up from 10:19, so the ride is in daylight
13:00 to 13:45Transfer back to townOur estimate; ask the kennel when you book
14:00 to 14:45Late lunch at Arktikum's caféLunch runs 11 to 15, Monday to Saturday, from 11 January
14:45 to 17:15Arktikum exhibitionsIndoors after sunset at 14:34; last tickets at 17:30
17:15 to 21:00Rest, sauna, dinnerThe buffer for the day
21:00Aurora tour, if the forecast is clearBooked that afternoon, not in advance

The husky tour costs 196 € per adult for these dates, as of October 2026 (Bearhill Husky). If you're staying at Apukka or Vaattunki instead, transfers cost an extra 12 € per person each way.

The same method on a different day

Ranua Wildlife Park works differently, because the trip is the whole day. The YourBus tour picks up in the city centre at 9:40, takes about an hour each way, and gives you about three hours at the park (Visit Rovaniemi, October 2026).

That puts your time at the park roughly between 10:40 and 13:40, inside the daylight. Don't plan anything else before the evening. The tour starts from 160 € per person, and zoo entry is paid separately.

Santa Claus Village fits a last morning before a flight. It's less than 5 km from Rovaniemi airport, so you can go straight from one to the other (Santa Claus Village).

Frequently asked questions

How many activities per day on vacation?

Two is plenty for most days: one main activity and one lighter one. On the day you arrive, plan one at most. A 45 minute husky ride near Rovaniemi can take three to four hours once you add the pick-up, the programme around it and the drive back.

How much time should I leave between activities?

Count the full door to door time of each activity first, including pick-up and transfers. Then add a buffer of 30 to 60 minutes before anything with a fixed start, like a tour pick-up or a flight. That buffer is our rule of thumb, not an operator figure.

How do I plan activities around daylight in Lapland?

Look up sunrise and sunset for your exact dates and put outdoor activities in the middle of the day. In Rovaniemi the sun is up from 11:07 to 13:22 on 21 December 2026, and from 10:19 to 14:34 on 15 January 2027. Save museums, saunas and aurora tours for the dark hours.

How do I plan an itinerary from a list of activities?

Group the activities by area, give each day one area, then place one main thing in each half day. Check opening hours for your exact dates and leave half a day free in the middle of the trip in case the weather moves something.

Should I book every activity before the trip?

No. Book the ones with limited places or a fixed date first. Leave flexible things like an aurora tour or a sauna until you're there, so you can pick a night with a clear forecast or a day when you have energy left.
