Do you need a car in Rovaniemi? How to get around without one
The bus to Santa Claus Village, the ride in from the airport, taxis, and which activities come and get you.

Quick answer. You don't need a car in Rovaniemi if you stay in the city centre or near Santa Claus Village. Bus line 8 runs between the two in about 30 minutes, the airport is 10 km from town with a bus and taxis waiting outside, and many safaris pick you up from your hotel. A car starts to make sense if you're staying in a cabin out of town or want to run your own day trips.
- To Santa Claus Village: bus line 8, 30 minutes, 3.60 € for a single adult ticket paid on the bus (as of October 2026).
- From the airport: the Airport Express bus (8.00 € adult one way on the operator's current listing) or a taxi, about 12 minutes to the centre.
- To activities: hotel pick-up is common for safaris. Check the pick-up list if you're not staying in the centre.
Do you need a car in Rovaniemi?
For most winter trips, no. The city centre is small enough to walk, and Visit Rovaniemi says as much on its getting around page. Arktikum, the Arctic museum, is 1.4 km from Lordi Square, about a 20 minute walk.
The two places most visitors stay, the centre and the Santa Claus Village area, are 8 km apart with a bus between them. The airport sits close to both.
Where it gets harder is outside town. If your cabin or glass igloo is 15 to 20 minutes out, you'll depend on taxis, resort transfers or tour pick-ups. Apukka Resort, for example, is about 17 km from the centre and 9 km from Santa Claus Village.
How to get from Rovaniemi airport to the city
The airport is 10 km from the city centre (Finavia), which is about 12 minutes by car on clear roads. You have two real choices.
Airport Express bus
The Airport Express is a private bus that runs between the airport, Santa Claus Village, the city centre and the railway station. It stops right in front of the arrivals door.
- Price: 8.00 € for an adult one way ticket, as of October 2026. That's the summer ticket on the operator's site. The winter fare wasn't listed yet when we checked.
- Paying: buy online or pay by card on the bus. The operator says it doesn't take cash.
- Timing: its FAQ says there's no fixed timetable, and that the bus meets passengers at the airport between 09:00 and 21:30, about every 25 minutes. Check this against your flight time, especially if you land late.
- Seats can't be reserved, and online tickets can't be cancelled, though they stay valid for six months.
The same company runs Santa's Express, a circular route linking the railway station, city centre, Santa Park, Santa Claus Village and the airport. Visit Rovaniemi names a Santa Claus bus and the Airport Express as the winter options between the airport and town.
Taxi
Three taxi companies have stands in front of the terminal: Taksi Rovaniemi, Lähitaksi Rovaniemi and Menevä. Finavia says taxis wait there at scheduled arrival times, and you can pre-book one.
We couldn't find a published fixed fare from the airport to the centre, so ask the driver for an estimate before you set off. If there are three or four of you, compare that with four bus tickets.
Local bus line 8 doesn't stop at the airport in the 2026 to 2027 timetable. It runs between the railway station, the city centre and Santa Claus Village only.
How to take the bus to Santa Claus Village
Line 8 runs all year from the railway station, through the city centre (the Ruokasenkatu stop), to the Arctic Circle stop at Santa Claus Village. The ride from the centre takes 30 minutes each way. This is the timetable valid from 12 August 2026 to 6 June 2027.
| Days | From city centre | Last bus back from Santa Claus Village | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 05:55 to 19:05 | 19:35 | Every 45 minutes or so |
| Saturday and Sunday | 11:20 to 17:35 | 18:05 | Six buses a day, about every 75 minutes |

On weekdays there's also an extra shuttle, 8C, between the city centre and the Arctic Circle on some afternoons. It runs from 19 October to 23 December 2026 and from 7 January to 5 March 2027.
Weekends are the tight spot. If you're visiting on a Saturday or Sunday, the last bus back leaves at 18:05, and public holidays run on a different timetable. Around Christmas, check Linkkari's holiday page before you rely on the bus.
What a bus ticket costs
Santa Claus Village and the city centre are both in zone A, so you need a zone A ticket. These are Linkkari's prices, valid from 7 January 2026 and including VAT.
| Ticket, zone A | Adult | Child 7 to 16 |
|---|---|---|
| Single, cash on the bus | 3.60 € | 1.80 € |
| Single, contactless card on the bus | 3.60 € | 3.60 € |
| Single, Waltti Mobile app | 3.30 € | 1.65 € |
| Day ticket, Waltti Mobile app | 9.00 € | 4.50 € |
Contactless payment has a daily price cap of 9.00 €, but it charges every age the adult price and covers one person per card. With children, the cash fare or the Waltti Mobile app is cheaper. Children aged 0 to 6 ride free with an adult, up to two per adult.
For a family of two adults and two children aged 8 and 10 going there and back, cash on the bus comes to 21.60 € (our arithmetic on Linkkari's fares). For a group that size, it's worth asking what a taxi would cost too.
Which activities include hotel pick-up?
Many safaris in Rovaniemi include a transfer, and Visit Rovaniemi's activity search has a "Transfers included" filter. Pick-up usually means central hotels, not everywhere.
One husky safari listed on Visit Rovaniemi, run by Easy Travel, includes pick-up and drop-off within the city centre. It collects from a list of central hotels and from private addresses around Santa Claus Village, roughly between 08:45 and 09:45.
Before you book, check three things:
- Is your hotel or address on the pick-up list? If not, where is the nearest meeting point and how will you get there in the dark?
- What time is pick-up? It differs by address, so look for yours on the confirmation.
- Does the drop-off go back to the same place?
Short-term rentals matter here. In our guide to booking Lapland winter activities we note that almost half of foreign overnight stays in Rovaniemi are in short-term rentals, according to Visit Finland. A rental has no reception desk, so the pick-up question is yours to answer.
When a car is worth it
A car makes sense in three cases. You're staying in a cabin a long way from a bus stop, you want to chase the northern lights on your own schedule, or you want several day trips.
For a single day trip, you may not need one. Ranua Wildlife Park is 81 km away, about 70 minutes by car, and Matkahuolto runs daily coaches there, according to Visit Rovaniemi.
If you do hire one, Visit Rovaniemi lists nine rental companies, several with desks at the airport. Most city centre parking costs 2 € an hour at ticket machines, and those tickets aren't valid at the airport or railway station car parks.
