The hidden costs of activities: transfers, gear, photos and add-ons
What operators' own pages say is included, what costs extra, and how to find the real total before you book, with Lapland examples.
Aino publishes this guide and is building a trip planning app of its own, launching in winter 2027. Every other app here is described from its own site and store listings, with prices dated.
Quick answer. Five things often sit outside a tour's headline price: the transfer, the clothing, the insurance excess on motor vehicles, solo or group fees, and photos. In the Lapland pages we read on 15 October 2026, we found a 30 € per person transfer, rental clothing at 20 to 25 € a day, snowmobile liability of 950 to 1,000 € unless you buy a waiver, a 50 € solo-driver supplement and a 390 € base fee on one private tour. Plenty of operators include some of these, so the job is reading each page's included and excluded lists.
- Add the transfer before you compare two prices.
- Check whether clothing, fuel and photos are in the price or an extra.
- Find the maximum you pay if you damage a rented vehicle.
What usually isn't in the headline price?
The table below comes from operator pages on the Visit Rovaniemi site and operators' own sites, opened on 15 October 2026. It shows what each page said, not what every operator does.
| Cost | What we found |
|---|---|
| Transfer | Pure Lapland: 30 € per person on top of 149 €. Wild About Lapland: included from selected places, 12 € per person each way from two resorts. Bearhill Husky: no transfers. Lapland Welcome: return hotel transfers included. PolarMax: free pickup, chosen at checkout. |
| Winter clothing | Included at Pure Lapland, PolarMax and Wild About Lapland. Not provided for Bearhill's Santa's Husky Rides. Rental: 20 to 25 € a day. |
| Snowmobile fuel | Lapland Welcome and PolarMax say included. Pure Lapland's list doesn't mention it. |
| Insurance excess | Maximum personal liability of 950 €, 980 € or 1,000 €. Waiver: 50 € (to 200 €) or 20 € (to 150 €). |
| Solo driver | Plus 50 € at Lapland Welcome and Pure Lapland. |
| Group base fee | PolarMax private tour: 390 € added at checkout, plus a per person price. |
| Photos | Included at PolarMax. Built into photographer tours at Beyond Arctic. |
| Food, drinks, travel insurance | Excluded at PolarMax. Viator's terms exclude food, drink and personal insurance unless listed. |
How much can a transfer add?
Quite a lot once you count heads. Pure Lapland's small-group snowmobile safari from Rovaniemi costs 149 € per adult. The transfer is 30 € per person, so two adults pay 358 € instead of 298 € (our arithmetic). The programme lasts 2.5 hours, or 3.5 hours with transfers.
Another operator, Lapland Welcome, lists its northern lights snowmobile safari from 176 € with return hotel transfers included. These are different tours at different times of day, so the point isn't which is cheaper. A 149 € headline and a 176 € headline can't be compared until the transfer is added to one of them.
Wild About Lapland's Happy Trail husky tour is 196 € per adult and includes transfers from selected Rovaniemi locations. Pickups from Apukka Resort and Vaattunki Wilderness Resort cost 12 € per person each way. Bearhill Husky says it doesn't provide transfers and links to Santa Claus Village's page on getting there. If you're deciding how to get around, read Rovaniemi without a car.
Do you have to rent thermal clothing?
It depends on the operator. PolarMax and Pure Lapland list overalls and boots in the price. Wild About Lapland includes arctic outer clothing but not snow goggles. Bearhill Husky's page says it does not provide clothing for Santa's Husky Rides (63 € per adult) and lists snow goggles as not included. The Husky Park's 500 m ride at 50 € also asks guests to bring suitable clothes.
Rental prices on two Rovaniemi operators' own pages: Wild Nordic charges 25 € per person for a 24 hour day, 50 € for two days and 75 € for three. Nordic Unique Travels charges 20 € a day or 50 € for three days, with boots as a 10 € per day option. Even when clothing is included, PolarMax and Wild Nordic both ask you to bring your own thermal underlayers.
What do snowmobile prices leave out?
Three things: fuel, the insurance excess and the solo-driver fee. On the pages we read:
- Lapland Welcome says fuel and insurance are included, the maximum personal liability is 950 €, and a waiver cutting it to 200 € costs 50 €. A solo-driver supplement is 50 €. The supplement and the waiver are both personal and can't be shared.
- Pure Lapland's snowmobile safari lists traffic insurance with a maximum personal liability of 1,000 € and a 50 € solo-driver supplement. The page doesn't give a waiver price or mention fuel.
- PolarMax's private tour says fuel is included, driver liability is up to 980 €, and a 20 € waiver brings it to 150 €. It lists personal travel insurance as an exclusion and strongly recommends it.
The excess is the most you pay if you damage the machine. A waiver changes that cap, and it doesn't replace travel insurance. GetYourGuide's terms say the booking price does not include any type of insurance. Ask your own insurer what your policy does for a guided snowmobile ride.
Are photos included?
Sometimes they're the product. PolarMax lists photos and short videos from your guide, sent after the tour, in the price of its private tour. Beyond Arctic sells several tours built around a photographer, such as an authentic reindeer farm experience at 185 € per person with edited photographs.
The Husky Park's 50 € ride price includes the park entrance fee, and its page says you can take photos while you're there. We didn't find a Rovaniemi operator in the pages we read that sold photos as a separate extra at checkout. Ask before you assume a photographer is coming.
How to find the real total before you book
- Read the included and excluded lists, not only the headline price.
- Check whether the price is per person, per snowmobile or per group, and whether it says "starting from".
- Add the transfer, or confirm that pickup is free and where it starts.
- Add clothing, a solo supplement and a waiver if they apply to you.
- Open the extras step at checkout. Some add-ons only appear there.
- Compare cancellation terms last. How to read a tour listing covers the fields on the page.
If you're comparing the same tour across sites, why the same tour shows different prices explains the differences. For typical operator prices, see Lapland winter activity prices.
Frequently asked questions
What are the hidden costs of tours?
The usual ones are the transfer, thermal clothing, insurance excess and waivers on motor vehicles, solo or group supplements, photos, and food and drink. In Lapland as of October 2026 we found a 30 € per person transfer, rental clothing at 20 to 25 € a day, a 50 € solo-driver supplement and a 390 € base fee on one private tour. Many operators include some of these, so read each page's included and excluded lists.
What's included in a tour price?
Whatever the operator lists, and no more. Viator's terms say inclusions are determined by the supplier, and that prices exclude tips, personal insurance and any food or drink not stated as included. GetYourGuide's terms say the booking price doesn't include any type of insurance.
Are thermal suits included on Lapland tours?
On some, not on others. Pure Lapland and PolarMax list thermal clothing in the price of their snowmobile tours. Bearhill Husky says it does not provide clothing for its 30 minute Santa's Husky Rides. Several operators rent suits at 20 to 25 € a day.
What is the insurance excess on a Lapland snowmobile safari?
It's the most you pay if you damage the snowmobile, which operators call maximum personal liability. Pages we read in October 2026 list 950 €, 980 € and 1,000 €. Two operators sell a waiver that cuts it to 150 to 200 €, for 20 € and 50 €.
Is fuel included on a snowmobile safari?
Lapland Welcome and PolarMax say fuel is included. Pure Lapland's inclusion list names traffic insurance and thermal clothing but doesn't mention fuel, so it's worth asking before you book.
