Rovaniemi vs Levi: which Lapland base fits your trip

A city on the Arctic Circle with Santa 8 km away, or a ski village 170 km further north. Airports, activities, northern lights odds and prices, side by side.

Rovaniemi vs Levi

Quick answer. Pick Rovaniemi if the trip is about Santa, you want a real city with museums and restaurants, and you like short transfers: the airport is 10 km from the centre and 3 km from Santa Claus Village. Pick Levi if you want to ski (44 slopes against Rovaniemi's 11), you like a ski village with après ski, and you'd trade city comforts for a slightly better northern lights position. The two are 170 km apart, so doing both in one trip is possible but costs you half a day each way.

  • Rovaniemi: Santa Claus Village 8 km from town, 583 activities listed on Visit Rovaniemi, flights from most major European cities, a night train from Helsinki.
  • Levi: Kittilä airport 15 km away, 44 slopes and 230 km of cross-country tracks, about 700 places to stay, no sun at all from 14 to 29 December.
  • Northern lights: both are in the aurora zone. Levi is further north, which helps a little. Clouds decide more than the base does.

What's the difference between Rovaniemi and Levi?

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland, a city on the Arctic Circle with an airport, a railway station, a university and a normal Finnish high street. Santa Claus Village sits 8 km north of the centre, right by the airport.

Levi is a ski resort in the municipality of Kittilä, about 170 km further north. The village sits at the foot of the Levi fell, and the whole place is built around the slopes. Levi's own site lists 44 slopes, 26 lifts, 230 km of cross-country tracks, 886 km of snowmobile tracks, 60 restaurants and 25,000 beds.

How do you get to each one?

Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi airport is 10 km from the city centre, about 12 minutes by car, and 3 km from Santa Claus Village. Finavia says the airport has flights from most major European cities and daily connections from Helsinki. The Airport Express bus and taxis wait outside arrivals.

If you'd rather not fly the last leg, a night train with sleeping cabins runs from Helsinki to Rovaniemi station, which is a short walk from the centre. We cover buses, taxis and tour pick-ups in how to get around Rovaniemi without a car.

Levi

Kittilä airport is 15 km from Levi centre, about 20 minutes by road. Finnair flies from Helsinki every day, several times a day in high season. For winter 2026 to 2027, levi.fi lists direct flights from Düsseldorf, Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, Manchester, London Gatwick, Milan, Amsterdam, Zurich and Vienna, some of them starting in November.

A Tunturilinjat bus runs between the airport and Levi for all scheduled flights. Outside the main season it becomes an on-demand shuttle that you have to book ahead. The nearest railway station is Kolari, 80 km away, and a bus meets each arriving train.

Between the two

Rovaniemi to Levi is 170 km on route 79. Our routing estimate is about 2 hours 20 minutes by car on clear roads, so allow closer to three in snow. Eskelisen's bus takes "around 2 to 3 hours" depending on stops and sells tickets through Matkahuolto. Doing both bases in one trip works with five nights or more; with three or four, pick one.

Which has more to do?

Rovaniemi has the wider menu. Visit Rovaniemi's activity search listed 583 activities across 29 categories when we checked, from husky and reindeer farms to ice fishing, floating, photography tours and the Arktikum museum. The city itself fills the gaps: shops, a cinema, restaurants and a riverside walk.

Levi's list is shorter but very dense around snow. Levi's site counts about 12,000 reindeer and over 500 huskies near the village, 886 km of snowmobile tracks and 230 km of cross-country trails. Most of it starts within a short drive of the village centre.

Which is better for Santa?

Rovaniemi, by a wide margin. Santa Claus Village says you can meet Santa there every day of the year, and the Santa Claus Office is open 08:00 to 20:00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, then 09:00 to 18:00 until 31 March. The Arctic Circle line runs through the main square. From the centre it's 8 km, about 8 minutes by taxi or 30 minutes on bus line 8.

Levi does Santa differently. Its Christmas page lists meeting Santa as one of the excursions you can book, alongside sleigh rides and snowshoeing, and Santa's Cabin on the fell is a photo spot you reach by ski, gondola or snowshoe. On 24 December 2026 the Declaration of Christmas Peace is read at Zero Point at 15:00. So you can see Santa in Levi, but you book a slot rather than walking in.

Which is better for skiing?

Levi, and it isn't close. Levi has 44 slopes and 26 lifts, with about 38 km of pistes and a vertical drop of 335 m according to skiresort.com, which lists the 2026 to 2027 season from 2 October to 9 May. An adult day pass was 58 € on the same site as of October 2026.

Rovaniemi's Ounasvaara has 11 slopes and 5 lifts, 6 km of pistes and 135 m of vertical, 3 km from the city centre. Its winter season runs 11 November 2026 to 17 April 2027, and its own price list for 2026 to 2027 gives an adult day ticket at 50 € and a child's at 38 €. It's fine for a half day or for children learning, and the cross-country tracks start within walking distance of the centre.

If skiing is the point of the trip, book Levi. If skiing is one afternoon out of four, Ounasvaara is enough and saves you the drive north.

Where are the northern lights odds better?

Levi is further north, about 67.8°N against Rovaniemi's 66.5°N, so it has a small edge. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says every second night is an aurora night in Sodankylä, which sits at about Levi's latitude, and three nights in four in northern Lapland, in both cases "providing that the sky is free enough from clouds." Rovaniemi is a bit south of Sodankylä, so expect somewhat lower odds there.

Clouds decide more than latitude. FMI names February to March and September to October as the best months. Visit Rovaniemi says the lights are visible from late August to mid April. Whichever base you choose, give yourself at least three nights and book the tour on the day, after checking the cloud forecast.

Darkness cuts both ways. In Kittilä the sun doesn't rise from 14 to 29 December, so Levi has longer dark hours for aurora watching in midwinter but very little daylight for everything else. Rovaniemi still gets about 2.5 hours of sun on the shortest day.

Which is cheaper?

We couldn't find a published, like-for-like comparison of hotel prices between the two, so we won't invent one. December is the busiest month in all of Lapland: hotel occupancy in the region was 79% in December 2025 against 51% nationally (Statistics Finland). Book early for either base in December.

What we can compare, as of October 2026:

Which has better nightlife?

Levi. Its own site describes après ski venues with live music and dance floors that fill up in the evenings, busiest at weekends and over the holidays, plus 60 restaurants in and around the village. It's a ski resort, and it behaves like one.

Rovaniemi has the restaurants and bars of a Finnish city, in the few blocks of the centre. You'll find a good dinner and a late drink. You won't find an après ski crowd coming off the slopes at four.

Who should pick which?

Families with young children: Rovaniemi. Santa is a walk-in, the transfers are short, and there's a museum for the afternoon the weather turns.

Friends who ski: Levi. Lifts from the village, long season, and somewhere to go afterwards.

Couples who want quiet and the lights: either works. Levi gives you darker skies and a cabin on the fell. Rovaniemi gives you glass igloos a 15 to 20 minute drive from town and a city to come back to.

Solo travellers: Rovaniemi is easier. More tours with hotel pick-up, a bus to the main sight, and more to do alone between activities.

Once you've picked, fit the days together. Our 3 day Rovaniemi winter itinerary has the drive times and daylight for the Rovaniemi side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rovaniemi or Levi better for a first Lapland trip?

Rovaniemi if you want Santa Claus Village, a city with shops and museums, and short transfers (the airport is 10 km from the centre). Levi if skiing or a ski village feel matters more. Both have husky, reindeer, snowmobile and northern lights tours.

How far is Levi from Rovaniemi?

Can you see Santa in Levi?

Yes, as a booked excursion. Levi's Christmas page lists meeting Santa among the activities you can book, and Santa's Cabin on the fell is a photo spot you can ski or snowshoe to. In Rovaniemi you can meet Santa at Santa Claus Village every day of the year without a tour.

Where are the northern lights odds better, Rovaniemi or Levi?

Slightly better in Levi, which sits further north. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says every second night is an aurora night in Sodankylä, at about Levi's latitude, as long as the sky is clear. Clouds matter more than the 150 km difference, so plan more than one night either way.
