Where to stay in Rovaniemi: city centre, Santa Claus Village or Ounasvaara
Three areas within 10 minutes of each other, and one further out. What each is like after dark, how far it is from everything, and how safari pick-ups work from each.

Quick answer. Stay in the city centre if you want the easiest trip: bus line 8 to Santa Claus Village, the Arktikum museum on foot, restaurants for every evening and hotel pick-up for most safaris. Stay at Santa Claus Village if Santa is the point, you want to be 3 km from the airport, or you're after a glass igloo. Stay on Ounasvaara if you want to ski or snowshoe from the door and don't mind a 5 minute taxi into town. Go further out only for a resort night with dark skies.
- Centre to Santa Claus Village: 8 km, about 8 to 10 minutes by car, 30 minutes on bus 8.
- Centre to Ounasvaara hotels: about 3 km, 5 minutes by car.
- Airport to centre: 10 km, 12 minutes. Airport to Santa Claus Village: 3 km, under 10 minutes.
- Visit Rovaniemi lists 105 places to stay and says there's no central booking system, so book direct and early for December.
How are the areas laid out?
Rovaniemi is small. The centre sits where the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers meet. Ounasvaara is the forested hill right across the river to the east. The airport and Santa Claus Village are 8 km north on the same road.
Here are the drives between them, from routing on clear roads. Add 5 to 10 minutes in snow.

Should you stay in the city centre?
For most trips, yes. The centre is where the buses leave from, where the restaurants are, and where most safari operators do their hotel pick-ups. The main local bus stop is on Ruokasenkatu, and line 8 runs from there and the railway station to Santa Claus Village all year.
Everything in town is walkable. Arktikum is 20 minutes on foot from Lordi Square, and Visit Rovaniemi says the cross-country tracks on Ounasvaara start within walking distance of the centre.
Evenings are the centre's main advantage. You can leave dinner until you're hungry, walk to it, and walk back. Nowhere else in Rovaniemi gives you that.
The downside is that it looks like a Finnish town, because it is one. If you were picturing a cabin in the snow, book one night out of town and keep the rest in the centre.
Best for friends on a first visit, solo travellers, anyone without a car, and families who want a supermarket and a pharmacy within reach. Our guide to getting around Rovaniemi without a car covers the buses and fares.
Should you stay at Santa Claus Village?
Stay there if Santa is the reason you came. The village is open every day of the year, the Santa Claus Office runs 08:00 to 20:00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and the Arctic Circle line crosses the main square. With small children, being able to pop in for an hour and go back to the room is worth a lot.
The village has its own places to stay: cabins and suites at Santa Claus Holiday Village, Nova Skyland Hotel by the Santa Claus Office, an apartment hotel, Santa's Igloos Arctic Circle with 71 glass igloos, and Glass Resort with 24 glass apartments, all listed on the village's accommodation page. A new hotel is listed as opening in 2026. The airport is 3 km away, so arrival day is short.
The village also has activities on site: Arctic Circle Husky Park with about 100 Siberian huskies, Santa's Pets for reindeer and other animals, and Wild Nordic for snowmobile and northern lights safaris. You can do a lot without leaving.
Now the part people don't tell you. After the shops close, the village is a place of hotel restaurants and a car park. The last line 8 bus back to the centre leaves the Arctic Circle stop at 19:35 on weekdays and 18:05 at weekends, so a dinner in town means a taxi home. Restaurants and bars don't crowd the village the way they do the centre.
Best for families with children under about eight, couples who want a glass igloo without a long transfer, and anyone on a two day trip who wants to land, see Santa and leave. If you have four nights or more and no small children, you may find it quiet by day two.
Should you stay on Ounasvaara?
Ounasvaara is the hill on the other side of the river, about 3 km from the centre. The Ounasvaara ski resort has 11 slopes and 5 lifts, with a winter season from 11 November 2026 to 17 April 2027, and the hotels by the slopes are about 3 km from the city centre, 20 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the railway station, according to Visit Finland. Santasport, the sports complex at the foot of the hill, is about 2 km out.
It's the outdoorsy choice. You can ski, snowshoe or walk the winter trails from the hotel door, and you're still 5 minutes from town by taxi. Lift tickets for 2026 to 2027 are 50 € for an adult day and 38 € for a child, with under sixes free with a parent (ounasvaara.fi).
The catch is the hill. The hotels sit near the top, so the walk into town is a long one in the dark and the cold, and we couldn't confirm a local bus route to the top from Linkkari's English pages. Check the Linkkari journey planner before you rely on walking, and budget for taxis.
For safari pick-ups, Ounasvaara hotels are close enough that many operators include them, but they're not the centre. Look for your hotel on the pick-up list before you book.
Best for couples and friends who want slopes or trails every day, and for families with older children who ski. Less good without a car if you plan to eat in town every night.
What about resorts outside town?
Apukka Resort is 17 km from the centre, about 18 minutes by car, and runs its own shuttle between the centre, Santa Claus Village and the resort in autumn and winter, according to Santa Claus Village's transport page. Visit Rovaniemi puts it at a 15 minute drive. Glass igloos and aurora cabins 15 to 30 minutes from town follow the same pattern: dark skies, on-site activities, and a transfer for anything else.
These work well as one or two nights inside a longer stay. Put the igloo night on the clearest forecast you can find, and keep the rest of the trip in the centre or at the village. Arctic SnowHotel, for example, is about 30 km from Santa Claus Village, so it's a day in itself.
If you're renting a cabin out of town, remember that nearly half of foreign overnight stays in Rovaniemi are in short term rentals (Visit Finland), and a rental has no reception desk to arrange a pick-up. That question is yours to sort before you pay.
How do safari pick-ups work from each area?
Most winter safaris in Rovaniemi include a transfer, and Visit Rovaniemi's activity search has a "Transfers included" filter. Pick-up usually means a list of central hotels, sometimes plus addresses around Santa Claus Village.
One husky safari listed on Visit Rovaniemi, run by Easy Travel, collects from central hotels and from private addresses around Santa Claus Village between roughly 08:45 and 09:45. That window is a good rule of thumb for a 10:00 start, which is when you want to be outside in December, because the sun is up for about 2.5 hours on the shortest day.
Before you book anything, check three things on the listing:
- Is your hotel or address on the pick-up list? If not, where is the nearest meeting point, and can you get there in the dark?
- What time is your pick-up? It differs by address.
- Does the drop-off return to the same place, or to the centre?
From the centre, this is rarely a problem. From Santa Claus Village, usually fine. From Ounasvaara or a cabin, read the small print. Visit Rovaniemi warns that many activities sell out early from December to March, so sort pick-ups when you book, not the week before. Our guide to what to book before a Lapland winter trip has the order.
Which area for which trip?
| Trip | Stay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First visit, 3 to 4 nights, no car | City centre | Bus 8, walkable museum, restaurants, most pick-ups |
| Family with children under 8 | Santa Claus Village | Santa on the doorstep, 3 km from the airport, huskies and reindeer on site |
| Two nights, in and out | Santa Claus Village | Shortest transfers, the main sight next door |
| Skiers and snowshoers | Ounasvaara | Slopes and trails from the door, 5 minutes from town |
| Couple, one special night | Centre plus one night out of town | City evenings, then an igloo on the clearest night |
| Solo | City centre | Pick-ups, buses and places to eat alone without a taxi |
If you want to see how a stay in the centre plays out hour by hour, our 3 day Rovaniemi winter itinerary runs on buses, walking and pick-ups only.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay in Rovaniemi city centre or Santa Claus Village?
The centre if you want restaurants, shops and the bus network on your doorstep and plan to see Santa once. Santa Claus Village if the village is the point of the trip or you want a glass igloo. They're 8 km apart, about 8 to 10 minutes by taxi or 30 minutes on bus line 8.
How far is Ounasvaara from Rovaniemi city centre?
About 3 km. The hotels by the ski slopes are a 5 minute drive from the centre, and the Santasport complex at the foot of the hill is about 2 km out. The cross-country tracks start within walking distance of the centre, according to Visit Rovaniemi.
Do safari operators pick up from Santa Claus Village?
Many do. One husky safari listed on Visit Rovaniemi collects from central hotels and from private addresses around Santa Claus Village, roughly between 08:45 and 09:45. Check the pick-up list on each listing before you book.
Is Santa Claus Village quiet in the evening?
Quieter than the centre. The restaurants there belong to the village's hotels and shops, and the last line 8 bus back to town leaves at 19:35 on weekdays and 18:05 at weekends. If you stay there, plan evenings around your hotel or a taxi.
Where should I stay in Rovaniemi for the northern lights?
Somewhere with fewer streetlights. Visit Rovaniemi says the lights show on clear, dark nights away from city lights. Resorts 15 to 20 minutes out of town, such as Apukka, sell themselves on that, but a tour from any base drives you to dark sky anyway.
