Is Santa Claus Village worth it? Queues, costs and how to time it
What's free, what isn't, how long the queue runs in December, and a plan for 2 to 3 hours.
Quick answer. Santa Claus Village is worth 2 to 3 hours if you know what's free. Entering the village and meeting Santa are free. Photos, the surprise gift and rides cost extra. In the busiest weeks, mid November to early January, you collect a free entrance time and queue about an hour inside. Take bus line 8 and go early, or late in the day outside peak.
- Free: entry, meeting Santa, the Arctic Circle line.
- Photos start at 57 € and the private Express Pass is 500 € per family (as of 15 October 2026).
- Bus 8 takes 30 minutes and costs 3.60 € each way for an adult.
What is free at Santa Claus Village, and what costs money?
Visit Rovaniemi says entrance to the village is free. Santa Claus Office and Christmas House both let you meet Santa at no charge, and Santa Claus Office needs no ticket or booking. The Arctic Circle line is marked in the central square. The village is over 50 separate companies, so the paid extras differ from one to the next. These prices were on the official pages on 15 October 2026.

Christmas House also sells photos of the meeting, and we couldn't find its prices. Prices for two adults who take the bus, buy one photo pack and ride the 400 m sleigh in December come to 151.40 € (our arithmetic: 14.40 € bus, 57 € photos, 80 € sleigh).
How long is the queue to meet Santa?
It depends on the date. Santa Claus Office says mid November to early January is the busiest time, and December the busiest month. On the busiest days you collect a free entrance time from an elf at the small red cabin near the entrance, by the Arctic Circle line. Times can run out: on some days the office says there may be none left after midday.
The entrance time isn't the moment you meet Santa. It's when you join the queue inside, and the office suggests allowing about an hour from there. Outside the peak the wait is usually much shorter, and April to September is the quietest stretch. In winter, the office says the hours near closing are often quieter than the morning.
These are the office's opening hours, all days of the week.
| Dates | Santa Claus Office |
|---|---|
| 24 October to 15 November 2026 | 10:00 to 18:00 |
| 16 to 29 November 2026 | 09:00 to 19:00 |
| 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 | 08:00 to 20:00 |
| 4 January to 31 March 2027 | 09:00 to 18:00 |
No own cameras are allowed in Santa's room, so the photographer elf's pictures are the only ones you'll get. Santa's Main Post Office is open 09:00 to 20:00 from 1 December to 6 January, and the Arctic Circle Husky Park 10:00 to 16:00 until the end of February.
What is the best time to go?
In the peak weeks, go as early as you can and pick up the entrance time first. On 21 December the sun is up from 10:58 to 13:32 (sunrise-sunset.org), so use the slot between your entrance time and your queue for the outdoor parts: the line, the reindeer, the huskies.
Outside the peak weeks, follow the office's winter advice and go late. The office doesn't publish queue times for January to March, so ask at the red cabin how long the wait is. In February the sun sets after 16:00, and the office is open until 18:00.
How do you get there on bus 8?
The village is 8 km from the centre. Line 8 runs all year from the railway station and the Ruokasenkatu stop in the centre to the Arctic Circle stop, in about 30 minutes. An adult single ticket in zone A is 3.60 €, and children aged 0 to 6 ride free with an adult, up to two per adult (Linkkari).
- Monday to Friday: roughly every 45 minutes from Ruokasenkatu, first 05:55 and last 19:05, with extra runs from 19 October to 23 December 2026 and 7 January to 5 March 2027.
- Saturday and Sunday: six buses, at 11:20, 12:35, 13:50, 15:05, 16:20 and 17:35.
- Back: the timetable shows no separate departure from the village, and buses reach the centre about 30 minutes after they arrive. The last arrival at the village is 19:35 on weekdays and 18:05 at weekends.
- 24 December follows the Saturday timetable, and 25 December the Sunday one.
On a December weekend the first bus reaches the village at 11:50, which may be too late for an entrance time. A taxi is about 8 km, and the village has a taxi rank. Our guide to Rovaniemi without a car covers the airport buses and taxis, and where to stay compares sleeping in the village with the centre.
A plan for 2 to 3 hours
A weekday in the peak weeks, about 3 hours:
- 09:30. Arrive on the 09:00 bus from Ruokasenkatu. Go to the red cabin and collect your entrance time.
- 09:45. Santa's Main Post Office, open from 09:00 in December. Write cards for the Arctic Circle postmark.
- 10:30. The Arctic Circle line, then a 400 m sleigh ride or the Husky Park while the sun comes up.
- Entrance time. Join the queue, and allow an hour. Decide about photos at the end.
- About 12:30. Lunch or a coffee, then the bus back.
A weekday from January to March, about 2 hours:
- 14:35. Take the bus from Ruokasenkatu, arriving about 15:05.
- 15:10. The Arctic Circle line and the shops.
- 15:30. Santa Claus Office, open until 18:00. Ask at the red cabin how long the wait is.
- 16:30. A coffee, then a bus back.
Is it worth it?
This is our view. With children, or if the Santa meeting is the point of the trip, yes. It's free, and the queue is the main cost. Adults travelling without children can shrink it to an hour: the line, the post office and a coffee.
The Express Pass is 125 € per person for a family of four and 62.50 € for eight (our arithmetic). It suits you if a private, booked meeting matters. Visit Rovaniemi also lists other places to meet Santa, including SantaPark and the Santa Claus City Office in the centre. If you want a safari too, our price guide shows what they cost.
