Daylight in Rovaniemi month by month, and how to plan around it

Mid-month sunrise and sunset times for Rovaniemi, the midnight sun and polar night dates, and when to book the activities that need light.

Rovaniemi daylight

Quick answer. In mid December the sun is up in Rovaniemi for under three hours, from 10:50 to 13:34, though twilight makes it light enough to be outside from about 09:15 to 15:15. By mid February you get 8 hours of sun, by mid March nearly 12, and from 4 June to 8 July the sun never sets. Plan daytime activities between 10:00 and 14:00 in December and January, and treat everything after 15:00 as evening.

  • The table below gives sunrise, sunset and usable light for the 15th of every month.
  • Rovaniemi has no strict polar night and about five weeks of midnight sun.
  • Operators schedule around this: husky and reindeer departures sit at 10:00 to 14:00 in winter, and aurora tours leave at 20:00 to 21:00.

Rovaniemi sunrise and sunset, month by month

These are the times for the 15th of each month, for the city centre, in Finnish time. Clocks move forward on 28 March 2027 and back on 31 October 2027. "Usable light" is civil twilight, which is bright enough to walk, ski or ride without a headlamp. The times come from sunrise-sunset.org and other calculators differ by a few minutes.

The swing inside a single month is big at both ends of the year. On 1 December 2026 the sun is up for 3 hours 57 minutes. On 21 December it is 2 hours 34 minutes, and on 31 December 2 hours 56 minutes. A trip in the first week of December gets an hour more sun each day than one at Christmas.

Does Rovaniemi have a polar night?

Strictly, no. The Arctic Circle runs through Santa Claus Village, 8 km north of the centre, and the city itself sits just south of it. At the city's coordinates the sun rises on every day of the year, even if only from 10:58 to 13:32 on 21 December (sunrise-sunset.org). Yle reported 2 hours 15 minutes between sunrise and sunset on 22 December 2018.

Visit Rovaniemi still calls late December the polar night and says the sun stays below the horizon then. We couldn't square that with the astronomical data, and the honest answer is that the difference is academic. The sun creeps along the southern horizon behind the trees, so a December midday feels like a long sunrise that turns straight into sunset. Locals call the glow around midday the blue moment.

Real polar night, with no sunrise at all, starts further north. Yle's figures for Utsjoki, Finland's northernmost municipality, had the sun below the horizon from 26 November 2018 to 17 January 2019.

When is the midnight sun in Rovaniemi?

At the city's coordinates the sun stays above the horizon from 4 June to 8 July 2027, about five weeks (sunrise-sunset.org). Visit Rovaniemi gives the same window as early June to early July and adds that the nights stay bright from late May to August.

Bright nights last far longer than the midnight sun itself. From mid May to late July civil twilight never ends, so there is no point of the night when you need a torch. On 15 August it is still light until after 23:00. If you want to see stars or the northern lights, you need to wait for the last week of August at the earliest.

What fits into each month's light

November to January: one daylight activity a day

Book the activity you most want to do in sunlight for a 10:00 start. A husky safari, a reindeer sleigh ride or a snowmobile trip of two hours fills the whole sunlit part of the day in December, and in November and January you get an hour of margin either side. Put museums, Santa Claus Village, sauna and food after 15:00. Our three day Rovaniemi itinerary is built this way.

The northern lights season is the trade-off. From mid December the sky is dark from about 15:15 to 09:15, so you can watch from early evening, though the Finnish Meteorological Institute says the typical time for displays is around midnight, give or take a couple of hours.

February and March: two activities a day

By 15 February the sun is up from 08:23 to 16:40, and by 15 March from 06:35 to 18:17. You can do a morning safari, have lunch, and still ride a reindeer sleigh in daylight at 14:00. The snow is at its deepest, and the nights are still dark enough for auroras until early April, which the Finnish Meteorological Institute calls the best time for them in northern Finland.

The catch is demand. Statistics Finland counted 381,000 foreign overnight stays in Lapland in February 2025, more than in January, so book the safaris as soon as your dates are fixed. What to book before a Lapland winter trip has the order.

April: long days, thinning snow

Mid April gives 15 and a half hours of sun. Snow usually lasts in the forests through the month, but operators' seasons wind down. Bearhill Husky's winter tours run to 4 April 2027, Apukka Resort's winter season to 4 April, and Baba Husky's 10 km trail to 31 March. Visit Rovaniemi's aurora season ends in early April, and by mid month the sky is only fully dark between about 22:00 and 04:30.

May to August: no darkness at all

From the middle of May until late July there is no real night. Hiking, canoeing and husky kennel visits work at any hour, and a walk at 23:00 in June happens in full daylight. There is nothing to see in the sky after dark, because there is no dark. The light comes back at the end of August, when the aurora season opens.

September and October: dark nights, no snow yet

In mid September the sun is up for 13 hours and the night is properly dark from about 21:00. The Finnish Meteorological Institute lists September to October among the best months for auroras, and Visit Rovaniemi's aurora season starts in late August. By 15 October the sun sets at 17:54. Sled seasons start in mid November (Bearhill Husky's winter tours open on 16 November 2026), and in October the dogs pull wheeled carts instead: Bearhill's Born to Run cart tour runs from 12 October to 29 November 2026.

How activity operators schedule around the light

Look at any winter programme and you can see the sun in it.

The practical rule: in December the 10:00 departure is the only one with the sun fully up, so book it first. In February and March the afternoon slot is just as good, and often easier to get.

The blue hour, for photos

The light around a Rovaniemi midday in December is what photographers elsewhere chase for twenty minutes at dusk. On 21 December civil twilight runs from 09:16 to 10:58 before sunrise and from 13:32 to 15:14 after sunset, about 1 hour 40 minutes each side (sunrise-sunset.org). The sun itself never gets high enough to flatten the colour, so the snow goes pink around noon and blue either side.

Two things help. Shoot during the activity rather than waiting for a better moment, because there isn't one coming. And set your phone to keep the sky blue instead of letting it brighten the snow to grey; most phones do this if you tap the sky and drag the exposure down a little.

How to lay out a winter day

  1. Put the one activity that needs daylight at 10:00. In December that is your only fully sunlit slot.
  2. Eat lunch after it, around 12:30 or 13:00. In December you will eat as the sun sets.
  3. Use 15:00 to 19:00 for indoor things: Arktikum, Santa Claus Village's shops and post office, a sauna.
  4. Keep 20:00 onwards free for the sky. Aurora tours leave around 20:00 to 21:00, and the best hours are 21:00 to 01:00 (Finnish Meteorological Institute). How many nights you need for the northern lights covers the odds.
  5. Check the day's transfer times, since a 30 minute pick-up loop takes a bigger bite out of a 3 hour day than an 8 hour one. Rovaniemi without a car lists the options.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours of daylight does Rovaniemi get in December?

On 15 December 2026 the sun is up from 10:50 to 13:34, about 2 hours 45 minutes. On the shortest day, 21 December, it is 2 hours 34 minutes. Civil twilight adds about 1 hour 40 minutes on each side, so it is light enough to be outside from roughly 09:15 to 15:15 (sunrise-sunset.org).

Does Rovaniemi have a polar night?

Not a strict one. At the city's coordinates the sun still rises for about two and a half hours on 21 December, because Rovaniemi sits just south of the Arctic Circle. Visit Rovaniemi still calls late December the polar night, and in practice the sun hugs the horizon and the day feels like one long twilight.

When is the midnight sun in Rovaniemi?

The sun does not set from about 4 June to 8 July 2027 at the city's coordinates (sunrise-sunset.org). Visit Rovaniemi gives the same period as early June to early July, and says the nights stay bright from late May to August.

What time is sunrise and sunset in Rovaniemi in February?

On 15 February 2027 sunrise is at 08:23 and sunset at 16:40, which gives 8 hours 17 minutes of sun. That is almost three times the sun you get in mid December, which is why February is the easiest winter month for fitting two outdoor activities into one day.

Which month has the best mix of light and snow in Rovaniemi?

March. On 15 March 2027 the sun is up from 06:35 to 18:17, nearly 12 hours, the snow is still deep, and the nights are dark enough for the northern lights until early April. The Finnish Meteorological Institute names March and early April as the best time for auroras in northern Finland.
