Gemini vs ChatGPT for trip planning in 2026

What each one can look up, what each one remembers, what the free plans include, and what the press tests found.

Aino publishes this guide and is building a trip planning app of its own, launching in winter 2027. Every other app here is described from its own site and store listings, with prices dated.

Gemini vs ChatGPT

Quick answer. Pick Gemini if you want the plan to draw on Google Maps, Google Flights and Google Hotels, and you live somewhere those features have rolled out. Pick ChatGPT if you want partner apps like Expedia, Booking.com and Viator inside the chat, or an agent that can click through a booking site for you. Neither one books a tour on its own, and both still need their opening hours and travel times checked.

  • Gemini's edge is data: places, hours, ratings, directions, live flight prices and hotel searches from Google's own services, all documented in Google's help pages.
  • ChatGPT's edge is reach: apps from Expedia, Booking.com, Viator and Skyscanner show live options in the chat, then hand you to the partner site to pay.
  • Both free plans can write a full itinerary. Paid plans cost about the same at the $20 level, as of October 2026.
  • Memory and apps have regional limits. If you're in the EU, check what your account shows before you rely on a feature.

Gemini vs ChatGPT side by side

Everything in this table comes from Google's and OpenAI's own pages, app store listings or dated press coverage, as of 13 October 2026. Where we couldn't confirm something, the cell says so.

How much do Gemini and ChatGPT cost?

Both are free to start, and the free plans are enough to draft a three-day itinerary. The prices below are as of October 2026.

Google's subscriptions page in the UK lists Google AI Plus at £4.49 a month, Google AI Pro at £18.99 and Google AI Ultra from £79.99, with a second Ultra tier at £189.99. The US App Store listing for the Gemini app shows Plus at $4.99, Pro at $19.99 and Ultra at $199.99. The free tier, per the same Google page, includes the 3.5 Flash-Lite model, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage.

OpenAI's pricing page blocked our access, so we're using the US App Store listing for ChatGPT instead. It shows ChatGPT Go at $8 a month, Plus at $19.99, and two Pro tiers at $100 and $200. Prices in euros differ, and OpenAI has started showing ads on some plans in some markets, so check the plan page before paying.

For trip planning alone, the free plans do most of the work. The paid tiers mainly buy higher usage limits, better models and, on ChatGPT, agent mode.

Where Gemini is stronger: Google's own data

Gemini can read public information from Google Maps, Google Flights, Google Hotels and YouTube. Google's help page for Maps says it can find businesses and attractions, give addresses, websites, ratings and opening hours, and give directions by mode of transport, with the option to avoid tolls.

For flights and hotels, the same help centre says Gemini can pull in live flight information and search hotels by location, dates, nights, number of adults, currency and amenities. It also lists what it can't do: book, cancel or change a reservation, check you in, or find package deals.

In August 2026 Google published a post on how Gemini plans trips. It says Gemini connects directly to Maps, Hotels and Flights and weighs "locations, travel times, existing plans, and personal preferences" when it builds a day. With Personal Intelligence turned on, it can also read flight and hotel confirmations from Gmail.

That matters for the two most common itinerary mistakes, wrong hours and missing travel time, because Gemini has somewhere to look them up. It doesn't make it right every time. In a Wall Street Journal test reported in March 2026, Gemini missed seasonal restaurant hours and underestimated how hard a seaside town was to walk in bad weather.

Separately, Google Maps itself now has Ask Maps, launched in March 2026 in the US and India. You can ask it to suggest stops along a route, book a restaurant and save places to a list. It isn't the Gemini app, and it hadn't reached Europe when we checked.

Where ChatGPT is stronger: partner apps and an agent

ChatGPT's partner apps launched in October 2025. Type "Expedia" or "Booking.com" at the start of a message and the app returns live results in the chat: hotels at your dates and price, flights, an interactive map in Expedia's case. Booking.com added car rentals in May 2026 and says that app is available to ChatGPT users globally.

Skyscanner added a flights app in February 2026 for the UK and US. Viator has a listing in ChatGPT's app directory for tours, attractions and experiences, though we couldn't find a launch announcement from Tripadvisor for the ChatGPT version.

In every case we could document, the money changes hands on the partner's site. TechCrunch's how-to puts it plainly: you "go to Expedia to finalize everything and book your trip." Booking.com's own release says you're redirected to Booking.com to finish. We go through each app in can ChatGPT book tours and activities?.

ChatGPT also has an agent mode on paid plans. It opens a browser, fills in forms and works through multi-step tasks. Coverage of the July 2025 launch says it asks for your permission before purchases. Google describes Gemini Spark doing something similar with Chrome, but we found less documentation of how it behaves at checkout.

Two caveats. Apps were limited to users outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK at launch, and we couldn't confirm the EU position in October 2026. And in a July 2026 hands-on test, Skift found ChatGPT repeatedly ignored or denied apps that were already connected until the tester pushed back. Expedia told Skift it was a known bug.

Memory: both have it, with regional gaps

Gemini's "past chats" memory lets it use earlier conversations to shape later answers, so your "no boats, vegetarian, slow mornings" carries over to the next trip. Google rolled it out to free users in February 2026 for every region except Europe, where it said it would come later.

ChatGPT's memory has two layers. The April 2025 update let it reference your other chats, for Plus and Pro users first, with the UK, EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland excluded at launch pending extra reviews. In June 2026 OpenAI announced a new background memory system, starting with US Plus and Pro users and extending to Free and Go users in more countries over the following weeks.

We couldn't confirm, in October 2026, which of these features a free account in Finland or Germany gets. Open the settings and look, then decide.

What the press tests found

Afar tested AI planning tools in a piece updated in May 2025. It found Gemini's facts and links "the most consistently accurate" of the services tried, with booking links appearing only when asked directly. The ChatGPT entry it tested was the Kayak GPT, which hands you a link to Kayak that opens in a new tab.

Tom's Guide gave five chatbots a four-day Black Hills road trip with a mileage cap. Gemini was the only one that put the route inside the chat rather than linking out to a map. ChatGPT, in that test, did worst of the group. Neither of the two won.

On raw accuracy, the biggest dataset is still SEO Travel's May 2024 test of 100 ChatGPT itineraries: 90% had at least one error, 52% scheduled a stop outside its opening hours and 24% recommended somewhere closed. That was an older model without search. We haven't seen an equivalent test of 2026 models, so treat both tools as drafts.

What neither one does: check availability or book your activities

Both can now tell you a husky safari in Rovaniemi runs at 10:00 and costs about 150 euros. Neither can tell you whether there are four places left on Saturday, and neither takes the payment. You click through to Viator, Expedia, Booking.com or the operator, and you do it once per activity.

Travellers seem to want it that way for now. Expedia Group's April 2026 survey of more than 5,700 adults in the US, UK and India found 40% use AI to help build itineraries, while 68% prefer a trusted travel brand at the booking step and 66% would not trust an AI assistant to buy or book on their behalf.

Whichever you pick, the plan still needs checking. We wrote a ten-minute routine in how to check an AI itinerary, and prompts that cut the errors in ChatGPT travel prompts that produce usable itineraries. If you'd rather use a purpose-built planner, Mindtrip vs Layla vs Wanderlog compares three.

Pick Gemini if, pick ChatGPT if

Pick Gemini if you already live in Google Maps and Gmail, you want opening hours and directions pulled from Maps rather than guessed, and the Google features have reached your country.

Pick ChatGPT if you want to search Expedia, Booking.com, Skyscanner or Viator without leaving the chat, you're on a paid plan and want agent mode to work through a booking form, or you simply prefer how it writes.

Use both if you like. Draft in one, paste the day into the other with "check every opening time and travel time in this plan and list what you'd change." Two models disagreeing is a useful signal.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini or ChatGPT better for planning a trip?

Neither is better at everything. Gemini pulls places, opening hours, directions, flight and hotel data from Google's own services. ChatGPT has partner apps for Expedia, Booking.com, Viator and Skyscanner, plus an agent mode that can work through a booking site for you. Both still get hours and pacing wrong, so check the plan either way.

Are Gemini and ChatGPT free for trip planning?

Yes, both have free plans that can draft an itinerary. As of October 2026, Google lists Gemini's free tier with Deep Research, Canvas and Gems, and the paid Google AI Pro plan at $19.99 or £18.99 a month. ChatGPT's free plan includes web search, with Go at $8 and Plus at $19.99 a month in the US App Store.

Can Gemini book flights, hotels or tours?

No. Google's help pages say Gemini can search flights and hotels but cannot book, cancel or change a reservation. The Viator app connected to Gemini shows tours in the chat and sends you to Viator to pay.

Does ChatGPT have Google Maps?

No. ChatGPT can search the web and show results from partner apps, and the Expedia app includes an interactive map, but it has no direct link to Google Maps data. Gemini does, including opening hours, ratings and directions.

Which one remembers my preferences between trips?

Both have memory features, with regional limits. Gemini rolled past-chat memory out to free users in February 2026, except in Europe. ChatGPT's newer memory system started with US Plus and Pro users in June 2026. We couldn't confirm the current status of either feature for free accounts in the EU.
