GetYourGuide vs booking direct: which is cheaper, and when it matters

What the platforms' own terms say about price, cancellation and support, with a Rovaniemi husky safari checked on both sides.

Aino publishes this guide and is building a trip planning app of its own, launching in winter 2027. Every other app here is described from its own site and store listings, with prices dated.

GetYourGuide vs booking direct

Quick answer. Booking direct is often cheaper, but not always. GetYourGuide's own terms say the price on its site "may be higher" than what the operator charges elsewhere, and operators who sell on the big platforms report paying roughly 20 to 30% commission per booking. Some pass that on to you, some don't. Direct can also mean stricter cancellation terms: the Rovaniemi husky operator we checked charges 100% for cancellations two days out on its own site, while its GetYourGuide listing allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before. All facts as of 13 October 2026.

  • Lowest headline price: usually the operator's own site, if the operator passes the commission on. Check the exact option and currency.
  • Most flexible cancellation: often the marketplace listing. GetYourGuide's default is a full refund more than 24 hours before the start.
  • One place to chase if things go wrong: the marketplace. GetYourGuide's terms promise a reply within 48 hours at the latest. Direct, you deal with the operator.

GetYourGuide vs booking direct at a glance

This table comes from GetYourGuide's general terms (version 1 October 2025), Viator's terms of use (last updated 30 November 2025) and both help centres, all opened on 13 October 2026. "Direct" means the operator's own website, where the rules are whatever the operator writes.

Is GetYourGuide more expensive than booking direct?

Sometimes. GetYourGuide doesn't claim otherwise. Section 16.2.2 of its terms says the posted or booking price "may be higher than the prices charged by Suppliers for the same or similar Activity on other platforms or through other sales channels." That's the clearest statement either platform makes on the subject.

The reason is commission. GetYourGuide's supplier page says listing is free and the fee is charged only on successful bookings, with the rate depending on the country. The page we opened didn't state a percentage. What operators report fills the gap:

These are individual operators describing their own pricing. They tell you nothing about any specific listing, including the ones you're looking at. The only way to know is to open both pages for the same tour, option and date.

For what Lapland activities usually cost at the operator level, see our Lapland winter activity prices guide.

Does GetYourGuide require operators to charge the same price everywhere?

We couldn't find a price parity clause in GetYourGuide's customer terms, and the clause above says the opposite can happen. What GetYourGuide does instead is give you a price match. Section 7.1 says that if you find the same activity cheaper online, with the same date, city, group size, inclusions and supplier, and it's still bookable, GetYourGuide pays the difference. You send a link or screenshot. The refund goes to your original payment method or a voucher (7.3). Loyalty, corporate and group rates are excluded.

Viator works differently. Its supplier agreement, filed publicly as an exhibit with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, requires suppliers to give Viator the lowest net rate they give any third party, and gives Viator "the right to set the actual retail rate" shown on its site. Viator's Lowest Price Guarantee covers the same tour from the same provider in the same currency, and the help page says it processes one refund per booking for currency swings.

Where GetYourGuide wins

Cancellation is the big one. GetYourGuide's default (section 10.4) is a full refund for cancellations made more than 24 hours before the start, and no refund inside 24 hours or for no-shows, unless the listing or the supplier's own terms say something different. Many operators' direct terms are stricter, especially in Lapland, where deposits and sliding scales are common.

Payment timing helps too. On eligible tours you can reserve now and pay later: GetYourGuide checks your card with a zero charge, then debits the price 72 hours before the activity (section 8.2).

Support has a stated response time. The terms say GetYourGuide typically replies within 24 hours and within 48 hours at the latest, by help centre, phone, live chat or email. Refunds go back to your original payment method, or to a GetYourGuide gift card if you choose that (10.5).

You can also pay for several activities in one cart, which we confirmed for our Rovaniemi comparison. Direct, every operator is a separate checkout.

Where booking direct wins

Price, when the operator passes the commission on. The operators quoted above say direct bookers get their lowest price, and Golden History Tours adds that its own site has more ticket types, such as private tours and add-ons that don't appear on the platforms.

Contact. Direct, you have the operator's email or phone from the start. Tanuki Tabi Travel says most issues get sorted by the guide "within hours" on WhatsApp. That's one operator's view, and it cuts both ways: if the operator goes quiet, there's nobody else to call.

Detail. Operators' own pages often carry cold weather rules, pick-up points and age limits in more detail than the listing. The Rovaniemi operator below spells out its cancellation fees day by day on its own FAQ; the GetYourGuide listing shows one line.

What neither does well

Neither shows you the other's price, so you compare tab by tab. Neither tells you whether the 10:00 husky safari fits before a reindeer farm 35 minutes away at 13:30. For a trip with four or five activities, that's where the planning time goes. Our trip planning checklist has a booking order that keeps the sell-out risk low.

A Rovaniemi husky safari, checked on both sides

On 13 October 2026 we opened a GetYourGuide listing called "Rovaniemi: Husky Safari with 1, 5, 10 and 20 KM Options" (product ID 239642). The activity provider shown is NordicUnique Travels. The page showed "from $159 per person", free cancellation up to 24 hours before, reserve now and pay later, and a minimum of 2 participants on weekdays and Saturdays or 4 on Sundays and holidays, with a full refund if the minimum isn't reached. Our browser displayed US dollars and we couldn't switch it to euros, so treat that figure as approximate.

We then opened the operator's own site, nordictravels.eu. It sells the rides as separate products: Snowy Trails Husky Safari 5 km at 179 € per adult and 149 € per child, and the 10 km version at 209 € and 179 €, both labelled "starting from". The site's FAQ sets the cancellation fees: free 31 days or more before, 10% at 8 to 30 days, 50% at 3 to 7 days, and 100% at 2 days or less. The pages don't say whether VAT is included.

We can't tell you which is cheaper from this. The listing bundles four ride lengths behind one "from" price in a different currency, and the operator's "starting from" prices may change by date. What we can say is that the cancellation terms were looser on GetYourGuide for this operator on that day. For a winter trip, what to book ahead in Lapland covers which activities sell out first.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Find the operator's name on the marketplace listing. GetYourGuide shows it as "Activity provider" near the bottom of the page.
  2. Open the operator's site and find the same product, same length, same date. Switch both pages to the same currency.
  3. Compare the cancellation deadline and what happens if the operator cancels for weather or low numbers. See how refunds work when the operator cancels.
  4. If the direct price is lower and the terms are fine, book direct. If the marketplace is cheaper, book there and keep the screenshot in case you need the price match later.
  5. If the prices are close, pick the cancellation terms you'd rather live with.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to book direct than through GetYourGuide?

Often, but not always. GetYourGuide's terms (version 1 October 2025) say the price on its site may be higher than what the supplier charges through other channels. Operators who sell on the platforms report commissions of roughly 20 to 30%, and some raise their platform prices to cover it. Others keep prices the same everywhere, so check the exact tour and date on both sites.

Is Viator cheaper than booking direct?

Not reliably. Viator's supplier agreement lets Viator set the retail price shown on its site, and one Tokyo operator reports its Viator price runs about 20 to 30% above its direct price. That's one operator's account. Viator's Lowest Price Guarantee refunds the difference if you find the same tour from the same provider cheaper in the same currency, as of October 2026.

Should I book tours direct or on GetYourGuide?

Compare three things on the exact tour: the price for your option and date, the cancellation deadline, and who you'd contact if something goes wrong. In the Rovaniemi example we checked, the operator's own site charged a 100% fee for cancellations two days out, while the GetYourGuide listing allowed free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Does GetYourGuide match a lower price?

Yes, within limits. Section 7 of its terms says it pays the difference if the same activity, with the same date, inclusions, group size and supplier, is bookable cheaper elsewhere and still available. You send a link or screenshot, and the refund goes to your payment method or a voucher. Loyalty, corporate and group rates don't count.

Who do I have a contract with when I book on GetYourGuide?

The operator, not GetYourGuide. Its terms say it acts as a commercial agent for the supplier and collects payment on the supplier's behalf. Viator's terms say the same thing in different words: it is a disclosed agent, and your contract is with the supplier.
